Welcome to my information.  I am delighted to have you visit:)

I am a graduate professor in the counseling programs here at Edinboro University.  I began my tenure here in 1992 and served for several years as department chair when counseling was its own department.  Presently, I am program coordinator for the college counseling program, school counseling program, and post-master's liaison for returning students seeking certification and/or licensure.

This year, I am also serving as program head for all counseling programs.  Thanks to Dr. Norton for her prior service in that capacity.

Counseling Club:  In addition, I advise the counseling club and co-advise Chi Sigma Iota with Dr. Connell (please get involved!)  We have dynamic leadership within this organization who are eager to work with you.  The club will be sponsoring a presentation that I will be giving on October 27, at 7:40 p.m. in Butterfield 202 about the important topics of licensure and certification (national and state).  Please reserve your attendance by contacting me at 732-1116 or Marie Beiswenger at 732-2421.  This will help us in planning for light refreshments.   Student contacts include club president Aarron Hunsinger and graduate assistant Caitlin Lovey.

Chi Sigma Iota:  Our chapter is Epsilon Chi.  Dr. Connell and I are now officially co-advisors to the honorary; so, if you are interested, give us a holler--or, better yet, visit the Chi Sigma Iota website and submit your application for membership.  Thanks to all of the students who have been actively working on this effort; notably, Dan Levandusky, as president.

Fall, 2009:  I will be teaching the following courses this fall:  COUN 712:  Development across the Lifespan, COUN 742:  Developmental Counseling in Schools, and COUN 752:  Law of Postsecondary Higher Education.  I will also be supervising interns, so watch for announcements here!

I have attempted to share new syllabi with those of you who have established accounts in LiveText.  Please check for those!  Tentative fall office hours will begin next week, as follows:  M:  7:40-8:10 p.m., T:  11-12:30; 2-3:30; W:  11-12:30

Notes to advisees:  Internship and practicum paperwork are due by Friday, December 4, in Butterfield 318.

Capstone coursework experiences have replaced master's projects for students not opting to complete a thesis option.  To discuss those experiences, come see me or watch for a group advising meeting that will be announced for my advisees in the near future.

Program coordinators are now handling internship information meetings for their program students.

If you have questions about licensure, certification, or the NCE, please let me know.  I serve as coordinator for the NCE at EUP and address specific questions about that process, as well.

Advisees--or those who THINK they might/should be my advisees:  If you have not attended one of my group meetings or met with me individually this semester to apply for candidacy, put together a plan of study, work toward internship or practicum, contact me ASAP!

Be prepared to let me know the following:

-your current status in the program, i.e. do you have a plan of study/does it need updating

-are you ready for candidacy

-are you ready for practicum

-are you ready for internship

-do you have specific questions regarding certification and/or licensure

If I have not met with you recently, please see me ASAP:  Trisha Eller, James English, Chris Gorny,Terri Hassek, Cathy Henson,Adrian McLaughlin, Anne Kelley, Nicholas Mennecke, Vince Senita, Andrea Leonardi, Jessie Zablotny, Matt Puskar.

Note to COUN 712/Interested Students:  I had mentioned a recent book authored by a serial killer's daughter.

The book is entitled, Shattered Silence:  The Untold Story of a Serial Killer's Daughter, by Melissa Moore.   Her father's name was Keith Jesperson, sentenced in 1995 to three life sentences for torturing and killing eight women whose bodies were left in various places across the U.S.

The book is published by Cedar Fort, Inc. (2009).  ISBN-10:  1599552388.ISBN-13:  978-1599552385.  There are excerpts of the book online, as well as brief snippets of interviews with the author.  The interview segment with Dr. Phil and Oprah is pretty good, as well as the "trailer" for the book at the publisher's site.

Note to Interns:  When scheduling becomes available, you should note your "intent to register".  When you go to the program pull-down menu, go to "intent", rather than counseling.  A listing of alternative course numbers will pull up.  Be sure to access a graduate CRN for the appropriate number of credits and proceed as you would typically do.  Be sure that your paperwork cover page notes "Cowher section" at the top because once your paperwork goes through, you will automatically be enrolled in that internship section.  As you know, we are handling this process somewhat differently than we have in the past.  Let me know if you have questions.

To School Counseling Interns:  Be sure to ask your site about whether or not they require you to have a TB shot for involvement with their school.  This is a common request for anyone who might be working regularly with school students, including parent volunteers.  If TB immunization is required, you can make arrangements through our health center on campus or contact your personal physician.

Note to College Counseling Advisees and Interested School Counseling Advisees:  Be sure to register for COUN 756:  Counseling the College Student this spring.  If you have trouble because there is a pre-requisite noted, let me know, and I will work to have that waived.  The reason is that I am unsure of when the course will be permitted to cycle again!  As you know, this course addresses DSM-IV-TR diagnoses, related psychopharmacology; treatment planning and programming related to the postsecondary population.  As always, contact me with any questions.

If you are planning to take COUN756 in the spring, be sure to look for the following text (readily available at Walmart, etc. for around $6.00):
